Applying Skin Cancer Research into Practice; Emphasis on Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection

Mar 1, 2017 1:30pm ‐ Mar 1, 2017 2:30pm

Description

Skin cancer has reached epidemic proportions and the surgeon general has established a call for action against skin cancer. Nurses are in an excellent position to teach the public about skin cancer prevention and to perform skin cancer screenings. The speaker has conducted several research studies with nursing students and nurses as participants. The most recent research focused on nurses teaching and screening patients for skin cancer on admission to hospital as nurses examine the skin of all patients. If nurses across the country educated and screened all patients on admission, nurses could dramatically decrease the morbidity and mortality of skin cancer.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate recent research studies conducted by the speaker (Victoria Siegel) and their application to practice
  • Describe the Surgeon General’s Call for Action Against Skin Cancer
